Chapter 19
He handed the photographs back.
“I am sorry.”
“I know.”
“No. I need you to hear it once without me asking for anything.”
I looked at him.
Ryan’s eyes were wet.
“I am sorry I humiliated you. I’m sorry I made a decision about our marriage before giving you any voice in it. I’m sorry I treated three years like a contract I could terminate cleanly. And I’m sorry my choices made you believe you had to choose between telling me about our children and protecting yourself.”
He paused.
“I’m still angry you didn’t tell me.”
“You should be.”
“But I understand why you were afraid.”
For the first time in five years, the memory of that dining room loosened slightly around my chest.

I put the ultrasound pictures back in their envelope.
Ryan stood.
Then he asked the question I had known would eventually come.
“If I had known that morning, would you have stayed?”
I looked at him.
“No.”
He flinched.
“I might have delayed leaving. I might have tried. I might have convinced myself the babies needed us married.”
I held his gaze.
“But eventually I would have understood that I deserved to be chosen before you knew what I was carrying.”
Ryan nodded.
It hurt him.
But he nodded.
“And if I asked now?”
“You’re not going to.”
His eyes met mine.
“Why?”
“Because you’ve learned enough to know that regret is not the same thing as a second chance.”
For several seconds, we stood on the porch facing the life neither of us had predicted.
Then Alex opened the front door.
“Dad, you forgot your phone.”
Ryan turned.
Alex froze.
He had said it without thinking.
Dad.
Ryan took the phone from him with shaking fingers.
“Thanks, buddy.”
Alex shrugged and disappeared inside.
Ryan looked back at me.
No amount of money could have purchased that one word.
And for once, Ryan knew it.
The night my husband's childhood sweetheart grabbed my waist so hard that I nearly fell in front of Chicago's wealthiest families, I expected him to defend me. Chapter 1: PART 1: THREE HEARTBEATS AND A BLACK FOLDER

A year after JFK, Ryan knew which child needed what.
Alex needed explanations.
Ethan needed limits he could test.
