Chapter 15
Maria looked up, startled by the presence of a decorated combat officer standing over her chair with a full meal tray, her eyes widening slightly as she recognized his face beneath the haircut.
"Excuse me, Ma'am," Ethan said with a warm, respectful smile, gesturing toward the empty wooden chair opposite her. "Is this seat taken, or may I join you for lunch today?"
Maria looked at his golden lieutenant bars, then into his clear, humble eyes that held neither arrogance nor false pretense, and a wide, genuine smile spread across her tired, weathered face.
"Not taken at all, Lieutenant," she answered warmly, moving her teacup slightly to make room on the table. "Pull up a chair and sit down. There's plenty of room for both of us."
Ethan pulled out the steel-framed chair, sat down, and unfolded his paper napkin with deliberate care, feeling the solid floor beneath his boots and the quiet peace of genuine honor in his heart.
Across the room, Senior Chief Hale watched them from the coffee counter, taking a slow sip of black roast, a faint, knowing grin appearing beneath his gray mustache as he turned away.
The cafeteria noise continued around them—a symphony of ordinary voices, honest work, and shared service—where every soul had a rightful place, and no table was ever the wrong one again.
