"I am a lieutenant, Ma'am," he protested instinctively, before clamping his teeth shut. The words had slipped out from reflex, a dying spasm of the pride that had governed him for years.

"Inside that galley, you are nothing," Victoria said softly, stepping closer until her face was inches from his. "You will learn what the base feels like to those who keep you fed."

Ethan closed his eyes, bowed his head, and breathed slowly. "Understood, General. I will report to Chief Rodriguez immediately." He felt the last remnants of his constructed identity crumble away completely.

"One more thing, Cole," she added as he stood to turn toward the door. "Senior Chief Hale will monitor your progress personally. If he reports a single complaint, your commission will be revoked."

He walked out of the administrative office into the dawn light that was now breaking yellow across coastal hills. The mist had evaporated, leaving crisp salt air that stung his red-rimmed eyes.

He surrendered his gold bars, his operational badge, and his identification pass at the security headquarters. The sergeant at the desk took them without looking him in the eye, setting them into plastic.

By 0700, Ethan stood inside the scullery of the central dining facility, dressed in stained blue dungarees with no name, no ribbons, and work boots that lacked polish or tactical heels.

The heat was suffocating, thick with steam from giant industrial dishwashers that roared continuously like idling aircraft engines. The air smelled of burnt grease, bleach, and sour vegetable wash water.

Chief Rodriguez stood before him with thick tattooed arms crossed over an apron. He was forty-eight, with teeth stained from coffee and eyes that showed no sympathy for fallen officers.

"Listen to me carefully, worker," Rodriguez shouted over the roar of water. "I don’t care about your trident, your academy diploma, or your friends in the wardroom. Here, you are hands."

"Yes, Chief," Ethan said, his voice drowned out by a tray rack slamming into metal rollers. Rodriguez shoved a heavy rubber apron and yellow gloves into his bare chest with force.

"You clean the garbage disposal pits," Rodriguez ordered, pointing toward three recessed floor drains where food waste gathered. "You clear them with wire brushes until I can see concrete beneath grease."

For eight hours, Ethan knelt on the wet floor, scrubbing congealed gravy, rice, and scraps from iron grates. His back burned with agony; his hands cramped beneath the thick, suffocating rubber gloves.
