Caleb took one unsteady step backward.

Vanessa turned toward him.

"What transactions?"

"Nothing you need to worry about."

"Caleb, what transactions?"

He grabbed her wrist.

"We're leaving."

But before they reached the aisle, a deep voice spoke from the back of the chapel.

"I wouldn't leave just yet."

Everyone turned.

A tall man in a charcoal suit stood near the entrance.

His hair was dark, threaded with silver at the temples. His expression was composed, but his eyes were unmistakably serious.

I recognized him immediately.

Daniel Mercer.

My father's oldest friend.

And the man who had disappeared from our lives nearly twelve years earlier.

Daniel had once been the chief financial officer of Whitmore Global.

When I was little, he visited our house every Christmas.

He taught me to play chess.

He brought me books about famous inventors.

And whenever Dad worked late, Daniel reminded him that even billionaires couldn't buy back missed birthdays.

Then, when I was twenty-two, Daniel abruptly resigned.

My father never explained why.

I assumed they had argued.

Now Daniel walked down the chapel aisle carrying a worn leather briefcase.

Caleb stared at him.

"You."

Daniel stopped beside Mr. Harlan.

"Hello, Caleb."

"You have no business being here."

"Richard invited me."

"Richard is dead."

Daniel's face tightened.

"Yes. And I intend to honor the last promise I made him."

He turned toward me.

"Eleanor, I'm sorry we have to meet again under these circumstances."

I swallowed.

"Where have you been?"

Daniel looked at my father's coffin.

"Helping him prepare for today."

Caleb gave a harsh laugh.

"This is absurd. You people are staging some kind of performance."

Daniel opened his briefcase.

Inside were several folders and a small silver flash drive.

"No performance," he said. "Just records."

Mr. Harlan raised his hand.

"Daniel, the chapel isn't the place."

Daniel nodded.

"You're right."

Then he faced Caleb.

"The independent board has suspended your executive access pending an investigation. You were notified electronically this morning. The board has also appointed an interim management team."

Caleb reached for his phone.

His fingers moved frantically across the screen.

Then he stopped.

"No."

He tried again.

"No, no, no."

Vanessa leaned over his shoulder.

"What?"

"My company account is disabled."

Daniel's voice remained calm.

"Because you no longer have authorization to use it."

Caleb looked at me.

And for the first time since we'd married, I saw something besides arrogance in his eyes.
