"Her husband, Caleb Bennett, has no authority to control, transfer, pledge, or manage those assets by virtue of marriage."

The chapel erupted in whispers.

Caleb shook his head.

"That's impossible."

Mr. Harlan turned another page.

"Furthermore, the voting proxy previously granted to Mr. Bennett for certain company matters was revoked thirty-one days ago. Written notice was delivered to him and the corporate secretary."

Caleb staggered backward.

I turned toward him.

"You knew?"

He stared at me without answering.

"You knew Dad had revoked your authority?"

His jaw tightened.

"He was confused near the end."

Mr. Harlan's expression hardened.

"Mr. Whitmore's medical evaluations and the independent witnesses establish otherwise."

Vanessa looked between them.

"Caleb," she whispered, "you told me the company was practically yours."

He ignored her.

Instead, he pointed at the envelope.

"There's more in there, isn't there?"

Mr. Harlan paused.

"Yes."

And what he said next changed everything.

Six weeks earlier, my father had invited Caleb to dinner.

I remembered that evening vividly.

Dad had barely touched his steak.

Caleb had spent most of the meal talking about an ambitious real estate acquisition involving a luxury development company called Sterling Crest.

He claimed the deal could generate hundreds of millions in revenue.

Dad listened quietly.

Then he asked one question.

"Caleb, who owns Sterling Crest?"

Caleb smiled.

"A group of private investors."

"Names?"

"Confidential."

My father set down his fork.

"Nothing is confidential when you're asking my company to guarantee two hundred million dollars."

Caleb laughed.

"Richard, you're being old-fashioned."

Dad looked at him for a long moment.

"Old-fashioned men built the company you're trying to borrow against."

The conversation ended badly.

That night, Caleb told me my father was losing his judgment.

"He doesn't trust anybody anymore, Ellie. It's sad."

I believed him.

Or perhaps I wanted to.

Because believing my husband was easier than accepting that the man sleeping beside me might be deceiving my father.

Now, standing in the chapel, I realized how much I had missed.

Mr. Harlan removed a second document.

"Mr. Whitmore also instructed me to deliver a sealed report to the company's independent directors and outside auditors. That report concerns financial transactions involving Sterling Crest Development."

Caleb's eyes widened.

"That information is privileged."

"Certain documents are confidential," Mr. Harlan replied. "Which is why they will be handled through the proper legal channels, not discussed here."

Then he looked toward Caleb.

"But you should know that the board has already been notified."
