Fear.

"Eleanor," he said, suddenly changing his tone, "sweetheart, this is a misunderstanding."

I stared at him.

Ten minutes earlier, he had told me I was worthless.

Now he was calling me sweetheart.

I almost laughed.

Instead, I whispered, "Please don't call me that."

The funeral continued.

Somehow.

I don't remember the hymns.

I don't remember who delivered the final prayer.

I remember only my father's coffin moving slowly down the aisle and the sound of rain beginning against the chapel windows.

Caleb tried to approach me twice.

Both times, Daniel quietly stepped between us.

After the burial, Mr. Harlan guided me into a private room at the funeral home.

Daniel followed.

My best friend, Grace, sat beside me and held my hand.

She had been my friend since college, long before anyone knew I was Richard Whitmore's daughter.

Grace was a pediatric nurse with an extraordinary ability to recognize when someone needed comfort and when they needed the truth.

Right now, I needed both.

Mr. Harlan placed the black envelope on the table.

"Eleanor, there are things your father wanted explained privately."

I looked at Daniel.

"Why did you really leave the company?"

He sighed.

"Because your father asked me to."

I frowned.

"Why?"

"Twelve years ago, Richard discovered that a senior executive was attempting to manipulate several investment accounts. He needed someone outside the company to examine the financial records without attracting attention."

"Was it Caleb?"

"No. You hadn't met Caleb yet."

"Then what does that have to do with him?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Because the same network of questionable transactions began appearing again eighteen months ago. This time, Caleb was involved in authorizing some of them."

My stomach tightened.

Mr. Harlan slid a folder toward me.

"Your father had concerns about several deals Caleb recommended. He hired independent forensic accountants. Their preliminary findings suggest that money may have been directed through companies connected to Caleb's associates."

"How much?"

Daniel glanced at Mr. Harlan.

"Approximately forty-eight million dollars in transactions require further examination."

I stared at him.

Forty-eight million.

My husband had spent months telling me we needed to cut back on household expenses.

He complained when I donated money to a children's hospital.

He called my charitable work irresponsible.

And now there were forty-eight million dollars in questionable transactions?

I pressed my hand against my belly.

"Did Dad know about Vanessa?"

Silence.

That silence told me everything.

Finally, Mr. Harlan answered.
