My husband walked into the Hawthorne Hotel holding his mistress’s hand like he wanted me to see exactly how happy they were together.

Rachel Morgan was beside him in a camel-colored coat, and Daniel’s thumb moved slowly across the back of her hand as they crossed the lobby.

Then he saw me laughing beside another man, and his smile disappeared so quickly that even Rachel noticed.

More importantly, the hand he had been displaying so proudly suddenly loosened around hers.

My name is Claire, and Daniel and I had been separated for four months.

Not divorced, not legally finished, just separated after twenty-seven years of marriage and at least nine months of his affair with Rachel.

Daniel had already told our adult children that our marriage had been “dead for years,” and Rachel apparently believed he had stayed with me only because he was afraid of hurting the family.

I knew the truth was less noble, but I had stopped trying to convince everyone.

That Friday evening, I was sitting near the Hawthorne fireplace with Michael, laughing harder than I had laughed in months.

He had been reminding me about childhood summers at Buckeye Lake and the day I fell backward off a dock while showing off.

I was wiping tears from my eyes when Daniel noticed us.

His gaze moved from my face to Michael, then to the hand Michael had resting across the back of the empty chair beside me.

Rachel said something to Daniel, but he did not answer her.

She looked down at their linked hands as his grip loosened, then looked at him again and quietly said his name.

Daniel continued staring at me.

When Rachel finally asked who Michael was, Daniel answered, “No idea,” so quickly that I almost smiled.

Michael followed my gaze and asked, “Friend of yours?”

I told him, “My husband,” and he blinked before looking at Rachel.

When he quietly asked whether she was the woman Daniel had left with, I said yes.

Michael gave a slow nod, then watched Daniel with the kind of expression only someone who had known me since childhood could get away with.

Daniel and Rachel started toward the elevators, but he kept looking back.

Rachel squeezed his hand again, and he barely responded.
