Now I understood that some people use explanations as openings for negotiation.

So I became simple.

Daniel can contact me directly about Lucas.

Please communicate scheduling through Daniel.

I will not discuss my marriage with you.

The first time I sent that last sentence, she called immediately.

I did not answer.

Ten minutes later, Daniel called.

“My mom says you’re shutting her out.”

“I’m setting a boundary.”

“She’s Lucas’s grandmother.”

“I know.”

“She thinks you’re punishing her.”

“I’m protecting myself.”

Daniel sighed.

Every sigh used to make me panic.

I would wonder what I had done wrong.

Now I waited.

Finally he said, “I got an interview.”

Despite everything, my heart lifted.

“That’s good.”

“It’s next Tuesday.”

“I hope it goes well.”

“Do you mean that?”

“Yes.”

He was silent.

“Elena, I don’t want us to end.”

I closed my eyes.

“I don’t want what happened to us either.”

“That isn’t the same answer.”

“No.”

Over the next two weeks, Daniel did several things right.

He stopped letting Marlene contact me on his behalf.

He returned some money he had borrowed from my account.

He gathered the SUV documents.

He apologized without adding “but” afterward.

And eventually, he agreed the vehicle should be transferred into my name as part of us separating our finances.

For a moment, I wondered if maybe that meant our marriage could survive.

Then Marlene invited me to the house.

“I think we should clear the air,” she said.

I almost refused.

But I realized there was one final conversation I needed.

Not with her.

With Daniel.

So I agreed.

Dad offered to come.

I said no.

This time I wanted to enter that house alone.

When I arrived, my SUV was still parked in the driveway.

No one had driven it since I left.

Marlene opened the door.

She was dressed carefully, as if we were having company instead of confronting six months of damage.

Frank sat in the living room.

Daniel stood near the fireplace.

There was coffee on the table.

Marlene smiled.

“Thank you for coming.”

I sat.

She began with a long explanation about stress.

Daniel’s unemployment.

Extra expenses.

A baby in the house.

Different personalities.

She talked for almost ten minutes.

When she finished, I asked one question.

“Why did you threaten to keep Lucas from me?”

Her face tightened.

“I never threatened to keep him.”

“You told me that if I left, I should not expect to take everything.”
