Chapter 26
“I won’t.”
I believed he would try.
Whether Daniel and I would ever become more than two people learning how to parent our son from separate homes was something I stopped forcing myself to decide.
Not every ending needs to answer every future question.
Some endings are simply the moment you stop repeating the past.
After Daniel drove away, I stood in my driveway for a while.
Then I looked at my SUV.
The same vehicle that once sat useless in Marlene’s driveway while I walked home injured.
The same vehicle whose keys had become proof of how little control I believed I had.
For months, I thought getting those keys back would be the victory.
It wasn’t.
The victory happened earlier.
It happened when I walked into that house and packed a suitcase.
It happened when I looked at Daniel and stopped translating his silence into love.
It happened when I stopped treating Marlene’s threats as facts.
It happened when I told my father not to fight the battle for me.
And yes, I will admit there was something unforgettable about the moment Marlene saw four stars on his uniform and realized the “career Army officer” she had dismissed was General Gabriel Reyes.
That silence was satisfying.
But it was not what saved me.
My father’s name did not save me.
His rank did not save me.
The SUV did not save me.
I saved myself the moment I stopped confusing endurance with strength.
For years, I had thought being strong meant carrying whatever people handed me without complaining.
Marriage problems.
Financial pressure.
Daniel’s shame.
Marlene’s rules.
Her criticism.
Her threats.
A baby.
Groceries.
Even pain.
I thought surviving all of it proved I was strong.
Now I know better.
Sometimes strength is putting the bags down.
Sometimes it is handing someone back the guilt they gave you.
Sometimes it is saying, “No.”
Sometimes it is walking away before the people hurting you give you permission.
And sometimes it is realizing that the mile you were forced to walk was the very road that finally led you home.
