Chapter 13
Then a message he had not remembered at all.
**I don’t want Bernice. I want my husband.**
His reply had come forty-six minutes later.
**Please don’t make this harder than it needs to be.**
Adam stared at those words for a long time.
He had no memory of typing them.
That somehow made it worse.
At 11:08 p.m., he sent Marina a message.
**I found the text from February 11. I’m sorry. I’m not asking you to forgive it. I just need you to know I see it differently now.**
Three minutes later, the typing bubbles appeared.
Then disappeared.
Nothing came.
Adam set the phone down.
At midnight, still nothing.
At 12:43, he finally received a reply.
**Nell had a rough evening. I’m sleeping.**
No discussion.
No reassurance.
No punishment.
His confession had entered Marina’s new life and ranked below a baby’s difficult evening.
Adam sat alone on the edge of their bed.
For the first time, he began to understand what Bernice had meant.
Marina had not disappeared.
She had simply stopped placing his feelings at the center of every emergency.
And because he had spent years assuming that place belonged to him automatically, being removed from it felt like falling.

That was his first mistake. The address Marina had sent led him to a narrow red-brick duplex on a quiet street lined with bare sycamores and cars shining under rain. It was not Rachel’s apartment.
